If you are an Oakland resident and are being disturbed by a barking dog, it’s important to try to speak to the owner of the dog. In many cases, the dog owner has no idea the dog is barking and will be willing to address the problem.
If this approach doesn’t work, please refer to Oakland Municipal Code Section 8.18.010 and the City of Oakland’s Nuisance Abatement Program for more information on how a citation may be issued. While an animal control officer or police officer may be sent to the address of concern, s/he must hear the dog barking continuously for 10 minutes or more to take action, which rarely occurs. If all else fails you may contact 510.535.5602 to request that a letter be sent to the dog’s owner explaining the law and the next steps.
If you believe an animal is in distress or danger, call 510.535.5602 with the exact address and specific details we may need to investigate.
