Fosters or adopters needed for Reno & Socks!

UPDATE January 12: Socks is in a foster home! (Reno still needs a foster.)
Socks and Reno have been waiting a long time! Some dogs are more patient while other dogs are more sensitive and just can’t take the shelter but each and every one has their limit. Socks and Reno have reached it.
Reno is a young dog who was surrendered with his sister. His sister was adopted a month ago but Reno is still waiting. He is a sweet, sensitive guy and is beginning to feel the stress of being cooped up in a kennel.
Socks is a special boy who needs a special adopter. When he first came to OAS in August, he was goofy, friendly, outgoing, and loved to cuddle with volunteers. After a lengthy stay, he is becoming stressed and starting to take longer to warm up to new people. Several adoption visits haven’t panned out because he doesn’t connect right away. We are looking for an adopter with a huge heart who will give Socks a chance to settle in, in a real, live home. We suspect that once he is out of the shelter environment, the goofy and cuddly guy we once knew will reemerge and he will bond strongly with his new family. He just needs a chance to prove it!
Are you just waiting for that perfect moment to adopt or have you always thought that maybe helping a shelter dog by fostering might be your thing? Wait no longer. These boys NEED YOU!
Wanted: two foster-heroes for Daisy and Brisco!
UPDATE January 9: Brisco has been adopted and Daisy is now in a foster home!
Two very different types of dogs need you to be their heroes and foster them!
Daisy, a young terrier, needs a medical foster home – she needs quiet and restricted activity while she heals after being hit by a car. She’s a snuggler – which is allowed but can’t be allowed to run around or jump, so will need to be crated while she’s recovering. We expect that to take 3-4 weeks. To foster Daisy, complete and submit our online questionnaire.
Brisco is a young active pibble mix who is our longest term dog at the shelter. He arrived on July 13th and would love to move into a real home. His foster family would need to help us market him so that he can find his forever home. He would prefer an active home with walks, hikes, maybe even agility work! He might do well in a home with another large dog but no cats for this boy! Learn more about Brisco on his profile page. To foster Brisco, complete and submit our online questionnaire.

Home for the Holidays: Pet Adoption fees waived December 5-31
In what has become an annual tradition, Oakland Animal Services is celebrating Home for the Holidays. Adoption fees will be waived for all dogs, cats and rabbits starting Monday, December 5th and continuing through December 31st.
“With so many people taking time off from work and school, December can be a great time to adopt and get a new pet acclimated to your home and family,” explains Shelter Director Rebecca Katz. “Pets are a lifelong commitment and the holidays are a wonderful time to think about expanding your family and sharing love with a shelter pet in need.”
Families on the fence about adopting a dog can also “rent to own” through the shelter’s foster program. Foster families provide temporary love and housing. They can then decide to adopt or help the dog find its forever home. Cat fostering is also available through the shelter’s partner Cat Town. Learn more about fostering animals.
Those who can’t foster or adopt can still help shelter pets this holiday season. The shelter has an Amazon wish list with much needed items including snacks, toys, and cozy beds for the pets.
Bay Woof Pays Tribute to Animal Advocates and Volunteers

Oakland Animal Services is grateful for the more than 7,000 hours of service from Mary Fong and Marnie Hamilton. Through their efforts, “thousands of small dogs who enter Oakland’s only open-admission shelter. They work tirelessly to socialize, prepare for transport, photograph, and vaccinate the animals, and work with our team to make the best placements for the dogs, often driving them to transports themselves,” states Kelly Miott, OAS Volunteer Coordinator.

“Fixing” Oakland’s feral cat population with Feral Change
In an ongoing effort to address the need for spay and neuter services for Oakland’s free-roaming cats, Friends of Oakland Animal Services (FOAS) is pleased to announce its partnership with local Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) volunteers, Feral Change. Feral Change is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the humane control of Oakland’s feral and stray cats. In addition to offering support to the community for TNR services, Feral Change is one of Oakland Animal Services’ partners helping to address the unique challenges of housing, re-homing and care of surrendered feral cats.
Our first joint venture is to spay and neuter 125 free-roaming cats through the trapping efforts of Feral Change. FOAS and Feral Change continue to explore ways to help address the need for low-cost/no-cost spay/neuter services of our community’s feral cats, and look forward to announcing new initiatives that will help area residents.
