This dog was rescued today by Oakland Police Officers. He was tied to a pole by a telephone wire and a rope around his neck. He had been pulling on the wire and rope to the point that they cut into his skin and the tight pressure caused his head to swell. Dogs should not have anything put around their neck except a proper dog collar. Collars should be checked regularly to make sure they are not too tight or too loose. Growing puppies can actually grow into their collars – causing a serious wound.
In California, it is illegal to chain or tether a dog to a stationary object (unless the owner is doing a temporary task nearby).

This adorable, loving pit bull mix wa s dropped off in front of the Shelter in a “t-shirt”. We removed the shirt off her wiggling body and discovered that her neck had a deep laceration. This appears to be from a collar that was put on her when she was a still a puppy but was never loosened as she got larger. Her neck then grew into the collar – cutting a deep wound into her flesh. She has been started on antibiotics and pain medicine and should heal completely. She will also get eye surgery to repair her “cherry” eye.
We also just got this shepherd puppy who was found with an extremely tight harness on. The harness had grown into her skin causing a large laceration across her back.
