You may have heard on news reports that there have been multiple cases of Canine Influenza Virus H3N2 (CIV) in the South Bay Area. Dog daycare centers have shut down, and veterinary clinics that are treating confirmed cases. CIV is a very contagious disease that, while treatable, can pose a serious health risk to individual animals. This virus is new to the Bay Area and at this time Oakland Animal Services (OAS) does not have any confirmed cases.
The most common symptoms are coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, lethargy, loss of appetite, fever. Some more severe cases may progress to pneumonia and require hospitalization. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, take them to your veterinarian immediately, and do not let them interact with other dogs for at least thirty days from the onset of the symptoms.
