Brother Bear quick facts:
- Has been friendly with other dogs (currently lives in a foster home with another dog)
- Little to no prey drive observed (happily co-exists with chickens and squirrels while hanging out in the backyard with me)
- Friendly with every human he meets, and wants to say "hi" to everyone on walks
- Low to medium energy
- Quiet! I have only heard him bark once, at a delivery truck backing up
- Loves to give slobbery kisses
- Rides great in the car
- Loves to go for walks, but doesn't need to go too far
- Has proven himself to be an excellent work companion, both at home and in the office.
Medical information
- Brother Bear came to us with atrophy in his back and rear legs, so he relies heavily on his front legs which are much stronger. Hopefully with time and a good, healthy routine, he'll rebuild strength in his rear legs.
- He has a condition called IVDD which is likely contributing to some small amount of joint pain (he is on medication to manage this)
- He also came in with an abscess on a rear leg which he has since recovered from
Prepare to have immediate family with this incomparable brother around. Brother Bear -- gentle, affectionate, obliging -- makes friends and keeps them, usually from the first lean-in for a hug, or glance from his warm brindled face. There are few people who can resist. Looking for a morning, afternoon, or evening long companion at a cafe, park, brewery, or living room? Brother Bear might be the best go-everywhere buddy ever. Looking for a compassionate work-from-home colleague? Brother bear will happily sleep under your desk and keep your feet and spirits warm.
Brother Bear is gentle with people of all sizes, takes treats politely and gratefully, and enjoys resting near his human consorts. He has been gentle and independent around other dogs. We think that he could easily live with one or more other polite dogs. He also has not shown any prey drive around other animals. In his foster home, he currently lives with three chickens; showing no interest in them, or squirrels on walks, we believe he might be able to live peacefully in a home with cats. He is slow moving and will do best with patient walks while continuing to rebuild strength in his back legs. He came into the shelter both shy and under-exercised, resulting in some muscle atrophy. In his foster home, though, he is greatly enjoying the ability to explore, sniff, take walks in the fresh air, and be in the world. This kind of exercise of his legs and spirit will only continue to bring him and his forever family joy.
If you are looking for the kind of dog who will be as good (or better?) than a human friend or family member, this wise, kind, incredibly huggable giant, might be the brother for you.
