2019 FOAS Year in Review
FOAS is hiring a transfer coordinator!
Do you love animals and want to help your community? Join the Oakland Animal Services team as a transfer coordinator! Improve the lives of animals in Oakland by facilitating transfers from Oakland Animal Services (OAS), the city’s only open-admission shelter, to nonprofit adoption partners and other outside agencies. Incumbent will oversee the Oakland Animal Services transfer program to include cultivating relations with partner shelters, selecting appropriate animals for transfer and maintaining communication internally and externally about animals being transferred. This staff position is also responsible for assisting the Foster Care Coordinator in fulfilling his/her duties in his/her absence.

Calling all cats and dogs (of all sizes!) in need of a fix!
Friends of Oakland Animal Services’ next free spay/neuter day is coming up on Sunday, Aug 11, 2019. No appointment is needed for this event. Oakland residents of limited financial means may bring pet cats, feral cats in traps, and pet dogs (of all sizes).
Pets will be checked in from 7:30 – 8:30am on a first-come, first-served basis. Surgeries will be performed by licensed veterinarians inside the East Bay SPCA spay/neuter clinic facility. Animals will also receive free vaccines and microchips.

Under general supervision, is responsible for developing and administering the foster program for shelter animals
Job Duties and Responsibilities
+ Recruits and trains foster care providers
+ Coordinates movement of shelter animals into and out of foster care; orders/provides supplies as needed
+ Assists with planning and conducting onsite and offsite adoption events
+ Coordinates and assists with veterinary care for animals in the foster program
+ Maintains regular contact with foster care providers; provides support for behavior and medical issues
+ Maintains meticulous records of animal care, status and location using the shelter database software
+ Provides regular reports to shelter management and the FOAS board regarding program status, successes and challenges
+ Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Education Requirements
+ Associates degree or equivalent from an accredited college or technical school
+ Familiarity by training or experience with basic animal care such as handling animals, vaccination, deworming, weighing and giving medications. Experience as a veterinary assistant or technician desirable.
+ Six months of experience working or volunteering with an animal care, rescue, or shelter organization
+ Valid Driver’s License
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
+ Commitment to the mission, goals and success of Oakland Animal Services
+ Knowledge of basic animal health care and safe animal handling practices
+ Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and database systems
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relations with the public and other employees.
+ Flexibility, adaptability, aptitude for effectively prioritizing multiple tasks and a strong work ethic
+ Ability to recognize symptoms of common animal diseases; ability to lift and handle cats and dogs (including large breeds).
Working Conditions
+ Primary work location in an animal shelter environment
+ Exposure to loud noises in the kennel areas
+ Potential for exposure to animal feces, blood, and zoonotic diseases
+ Potential for exposure to animal bites and scratches
+ Must be able to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings and weekends
+ Must be able to tolerate the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of euthanasia

Friends of Oakland Animal Services (FOAS) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for shelter animals. Founded by Oakland Animal Services volunteers in December 2005, FOAS was created to support the municipal shelter’s efforts to better care for thousands of animals each year in the face of Oakland’s ongoing budgetary challenges. Our mission is to provide homes, health, and happiness for Oakland’s homeless animals.
Help the FOAS Running Team raise $15K as they participate in the Oakland Running Festival!
The Friends of Oakland Animal Services have put together a running team to participate in the Oakland Running Festival half-marathon on March 24, 2019 and raise $15,000 for much-needed programs like the free Pet Fix clinics. They have been training hard and now need your help to get them to $15,000.
The team also invites everyone to celebrate after the race with a benefit dinner at Sanctuary Bistro in Berkeley. The restaurant will be donating 30% of all dinner food sales on March 24 to FOAS. We hope to see you there!
FOAS, OAS, and Cat Town need your vote!!
Cat Town, in partnership with Oakland Animal Services (OAS) and Friends of Oakland Animal Services (FOAS), has been selected as one of seven organizations across the nation to compete for a finalist spot at the 2019 Innovation Showdown. This is a chance to fund a 2-year pilot project to help at-risk animals stay with their families and get adopted with as little stress as possible. Please vote to help us keep pets in homes — and keep our shelter a last resort for animals in need!
