At our community outreach clinic this month held at Arroyo Viejo Park, 100 dogs and 32 cats in Oakland received free medical care from our veterinary team, including vaccinations, microchips, and veterinary exams. Pet food and supplies such as collars, leashes, harnesses, and tags were also provided to pet guardians at no cost.
We are so grateful to Councilmembers Loren Taylor and Treva Reid for supporting this effort. We also certainly could not have done this without all the help from our amazing volunteers and staff. Thank you all so very much. Stay tuned for our next community outreach clinic date!

Exciting news! OAS was recently featured in The Oaklandside announcing that adoptions are up and the numbers of dogs being euthanized are at historic lows.
Our transition from a shelter-based model to a community-based model is paying off! In this model, we place more emphasis and effort on keeping pets with their loving families and in foster homes instead of being housed in the shelter.
This is a huge win for us as Oakland’s only open-admission shelter which takes in over 5,000 animals each year.

Thanks to a generous grant from Petco Love, we were able to hold a community clinic at Verdese Carter Park this month. The clinic was open to the public, serving residents of East Oakland. The clinic was a tremendous success, with 136 pets receiving free medical care from our veterinary team.
Veterinary treatment included vaccinations, flea medication, microchips, and veterinary exams. In addition, pet food and supplies such as collars, leashes, harnesses, and tags were provided to pet guardians at no cost.
We are so grateful to Petco Love for their generous grant! We also certainly could not have done this without all the help from our amazing volunteers and staff. Thank you all so much!

On December 14, at 7:24 am, Oakland Animal Services (OAS) received a call regarding a dog that appeared to have been severely neglected. Our first officer arrived on the scene by 8:30 am and found a dog in dire condition. OAS seized the dog, and took it for emergency veterinary care, and an officer from OPD arrested the owner. OAS has initiated an investigation and will pursue appropriate remedies.
We appreciate that this situation caught people’s attention and want to address the limited facts we can share as well as the disinformation on social media. We share the community’s outrage at this horrible act of cruelty.
